# Hdf5 version for v2.12.2.1

Hi all, for v2.12.2.1 there is comment in README that we need hdf5 1.8.18 onwards. I would like to know what may be the implication of using say 1.8.16 instead? Is there some specific feature that may not work or it just won’t work in general?

Hi Sunil,

The reason is because there were known vulnerabilities prior to 1.8.18. However, use older versions at your own risk.
